CARING

Dear Mariela - Reflection poem

Caring is not about hugs,

it is not about tears,

nor is it impossible for thugs.

Caring is about looking after others’ fears.

In 2018 I witnessed loss.

fifty years after repression,

terror is still the boss.

“¿Dónde está Mariela?”

Through the eye of my lens,

through the eye of Gilead,

Mexico has lost sight of the heavens,

losing citizens instead.

In 2018 I witnessed loss.

fifty years after repression,

terror is still the boss.

“¿Dónde está Mariela?”

Like a palimpsest of the hawks,

The Iguala disaster came across.

But the green light still stalks,

Valley of Ashes full of loss.

In 2018 I witnessed loss.

fifty years after repression,

terror is still the boss.

“¿Dónde está Mariela?”

Wherever I go,

Whatever we do,

Caring I must not forgo,

Caring we must not undo.
